Elbow Dysplasia

Elbow dysplasia is a developmental condition that affects the elbow joint in growing dogs. Rather than developing smoothly, parts of the elbow joint do not fit together correctly, leading to abnormal wear, inflammation, pain, and eventually arthritis. It is one of the most common causes of front leg lameness in young and large-breed dogs. Signs and Symptoms: - Front leg limping or lameness - Stiffness, especially after rest - Reluctance to exercise or play - Difficulty getting up from lying down - Reduced range of motion in the elbow - Pain when the elbow is touched or manipulated - Bunny hopping or altered gait - Decreased endurance during walks Signs may appear as early as 4 to 12 months of age, although some dogs are not diagnosed until later in life when arthritis develops. Diagnosis - your veterinarian may recommend: - Orthopaedic examination - X-rays - CT scans - Advanced imaging or arthroscopy Early diagnosis often leads to better long-term outcomes and improved mobility. Treatment Options: Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may include: - Weight management - Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications - Joint supplements - Controlled exercise programs - Rehabilitation and hydrotherapy - Surgical intervention in some cases Many dogs benefit from a combination of treatments designed to reduce pain and improve joint function. How Hydrotherapy Can Help: Hydrotherapy is commonly used as part of a comprehensive management plan for dogs with elbow dysplasia. The buoyancy of water reduces stress on painful joints while allowing dogs to exercise safely and effectively. Hydrotherapy may help: - Improve muscle strength - Increase joint mobility - Reduce pain and stiffness - Support weight management - Enhance overall fitness and function - Maintain mobility as arthritis progresses Because every dog is different, hydrotherapy programs should be tailored to the individual dog's condition, age, fitness level, and veterinary recommendations. We work closely with your veterinarian to provide safe, controlled hydrotherapy sessions designed to support dogs living with elbow dysplasia. Our goal is to help your dog move more comfortably, build strength, and maintain the best possible quality of life. Please note: Hydrotherapy is not a cure for elbow dysplasia but can play an important role in managing symptoms and supporting long-term joint health.
