Service FAQs

What is canine hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy uses warm water, buoyancy, and controlled movement to reduce pain, improve mobility, and build strength.  It's safe, low-impact, and suitable for dogs of all ages and abilities.

What is the duration of a rehab plan typically?

The number of sessions required will depend on the condition being treated.   This will be assessed in the initial consultation where a plan will be made and adjusted at each session, for best results.  We perform constant functional evaluations to tweak the challenge levels, ensuring your dog moves safely toward peak strength and coordination.  Often post-surgical recovery is once to twice weekly for 10-12 weeks.  Dogs with arthritis may attend weekly to increase strength, mobility and fitness.

What is the difference between an underwater treadmill and swimming?

Underwater treadmills allow for controlled, weight-bearing exercise where the water height can be adjusted to support different joints, promoting a more natural gait.  The treadmill is often preferred for targeted orthopedic recovery, while swimming is excellent for overall conditioning and stamina.

When using an underwater treadmill, joint extension is more complete than swimming, allowing for greater range of movement.  The water is also safe, clean and the correct temperature to increase blood flow to muscles and relieve joint pain.

Swimming is a non-weight-bearing activity that focuses more on cardiovascular fitness and range of motion without the impact of ground contact.

May I stay during the session?

Absolutely, we encourage you to remain present so your dog feels secure, which helps maintain lower stress levels and focus.

Are there any conditions where hydrotherapy is not recommended?

Dogs with the following conditions cannot attend hydrotherapy: skin infections, open wounds, infectious or contagious illnesses such as gastric upsets or digestive bugs, kennel cough, eye or skin infections.  Furthermore, those with significant heart or lung issues, vestibular episodes, or severe epilepsy must be cleared by a vet first.

Safety is our priority, so a formal medical referral is mandatory for any such underlying conditions before we proceed with hydrotherapy for your pet.

What's the difference between the slatmill and the motorised treadmill?

Slatmill: encourages natural gait, drive, power, and acceleration

Motorised treadmill: provides controlled speed, consistent pacing, and safe warm-up/cool-down.

Your signature system uses both for balanced strength, mobility, and conditioning.
